Metal localisation was investigated in the lichenised ascomycete Trapelia involuta growing on a range of uraniferous minerals including metazeunerite [Cu(UO2)2(AsO4)2·8H2O], metatorbernite [Cu(UO2)2(PO4)2·8H2O], autunite [Ca(UO2)2(PO4)2·10H2O] and uranium-enriched iron oxide and hydroxide minerals at the abandoned South Terras mine site, Cornwall, UK. Apothecia from samples collected from waste dumps at the mine have an unusually dark colour that decolorized with NaOCl, an observation which together with Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy of apothecial extracts, suggested the presence of melanin-like pigments. X-ray element mapping and probe traverses across the lichen-rock interface identify the highest U, Fe, and Cu concentrations in the outer parts of melanised apothecia. Accumulation of mineral particulates and complexing with lichen acids are not considered responsible for this since element ratios in the traverses do not correspond with those of likely mineral phases and lichen metabolites are localised in different tissues. Metal biosorption by melanin-like pigments are likely to be responsible for the observed metal fixation. No detectable U or Cu was observed in control samples although Fe showed a similar localisation in some specimens. The high concentrations of mucopolysaccharides and P recorded inside apothecia (within asci containing reproductive spores and hypothecium) suggests that the formation of melanised tissues may help protect vital reproductive tissues from the toxic effects of U and other metals, since the uranyl ion complexes strongly with phosphate species. 相似文献

Their chemical properties make it asubstrate of enormous biotechnological value.The basic chemistry of cellulose,hemicellulose, and lignin has a profound effecton lignocellulose tertiary architecture. Theseintricate associations constitute physical andchemical barriers to lignocellulose utilizationand biodegradation in natural and man-madeenvironments. Overcoming these barriers is thekey to unlocking the commercial potential oflignocellulose. Understanding lignocellulosedegradation under natural conditions forms thebasis of any lignocellulose-based application.A variety of microorganisms and mechanisms areinvolved in the complete biodegradation oflignocellulose in natural environments rangingfrom soil and rumen ecosystems to the termitehindgut. The primary objective oflignocellulose pretreatment by the variousindustries is to access the potential of thecellulose and hemicellulose encrusted by ligninwithin the lignocellulose matrix. Currentworking technologies based on the principles ofsolid-state fermentation (SSF) are brieflyreviewed. The use of unsterile lignocellulosicsfor bioremediation purposes holds promise forcost-effective environmental clean-upendeavors. Novel lignocellulose-basedapplications have found functionality intextile, biological control, and medicalresearch fields and might be exploited there inthe near future. Ultimately, lignocellulosewill probably accompany man to his voyages intospace for interest in this field isintensifying. Subclinical hyperthyroidism (SCHyper) is a biochemical diagnosis characterized by a decreased serum thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH) and normal serum thyroxine (T4) and triiodothyronine (T3) concentrations. Because SCHyper can be resolved, it is recommended to repeat serum TSH, T3, and T4 concentrations in 3 to 6 months before confirming a diagnosis of SCHyper to consider treatment. Proposed grading systems distinguish between mild (TSH, 0.1-0.4 mIU/L) and severe SCHyper (TSH, <0.1 mIU/L) and are used alongside patients’ age and the presence of risk factors and symptoms to guide treatment. Appropriate evaluation includes an investigation of the underlying cause and assessment of an individual’s risk factors to determine the necessity and type of treatment that may be recommended. SCHyper may be associated with increased risks of cardiovascular-related adverse outcomes, bone loss, and in some studies, cognitive decline. Treatment may include observation without therapy, initiation of antithyroid medications, or pursuit of radioiodine therapy or thyroid surgery. Considerations for treatment include the SCHyper etiology, anticipated long-term natural history of the condition, potential benefits of correcting the thyroid dysfunction, and risks and benefits of each treatment option. The purpose of this overview is to provide a guide for clinicians in evaluating and managing SCHyper in the routine clinical practice. 相似文献

ObjectiveTo review he impact of estrogen-containing feminizing hormone regimens on transgender individuals’ risk for VTE.MethodsWe evaluated VTE risk by screening 1170 relevant studies published from 1994 to 2020, focusing on meta-analysis data.ResultsThe type of oral estrogen, route of administration, patient demographics, and comorbidities may affect the risk of VTE. Venous thrombosis is the most common vascular complication associated with HT.ConclusionConjugated equine estrogens and 17-β estradiol appear to be safer than oral ethinyl estradiol. Transdermal estrogen formulations appear to be the least thrombogenic estrogens. Estrogens used concomitantly with progestins increase the risk of VTE compared to estrogens alone.To date, there are no data to demonstrate the benefit of holding HT prior to vaginoplasty or other gender affirming surgeries. For most young, healthy transgender women, there is little risk of VTE with HT, while older patients with risk factors should be discussed case by case. 相似文献

Catalytic properties of glutathione reductase (GR; EC 1.6.4.2) have been investigated using homogenous preparations of this enzyme purified from livers of control rats and rats with toxic hepatitis. Some properties of this enzyme remained unchanged under conditions of toxic hepatitis; these included eletrophoretic mobility (Rf = 0.23 ± 0.01), molecular mass (104.5 ± 5.2 kDa), pH optimum (7.4 ± 0.37), as well as close pK values of functional groups. However, enzyme isolated from toxic liver was characterized by lower affinity for substrate and coenzyme as well as by appearance of substrate inhibition. Evidence for the multifaceted responses of terrestrial ecosystems has been shown by the weakening of CO2 fertilization-induced and warming-controlled productivity gains. The intricate relationship between vegetation productivity and various environmental controls still remains elusive spatially. Here several inherent preponderances make China a natural experimental setting to investigate the interaction and relative contributions of five drivers to gross primary productivity for the period from 1982 to 2018 (i.e., elevated atmospheric CO2 concentrations, climate change, nutrient availability, anthropogenic land use change, and soil moisture) by coupling multiple long-term datasets. Despite a strikingly prominent enhancement of vegetation productivity in China, it exhibits similar saturation responses to the aforementioned environmental drivers (elevated CO2, climatic factors, and soil moisture). The CO2 fertilization-dominated network explains the long-term variations in vegetation productivity in humid regions, but its effect is clearly attenuated or even absent in arid and alpine environments controlled by climate and soil moisture. Divergence in interactions also provides distinct evidence that water availability plays an essential role in limiting the potential effects of climate change and elevated CO2 concentrations on vegetation productivity. Unprecedented industrialization and dramatic surface changes may have breached critical thresholds of terrestrial ecosystems under the diverse natural environment and thus forced a shift from a period dominated by CO2 fertilization to a period with nonlinear interactions. These findings suggest that future benefits in terrestrial ecosystems are likely to be counteracted by uncertainties in the complicated network, implying an increasing reliance on human societies to combat potential risks. Our results therefore highlight the need to account for the intricate interactions globally and thus incorporate them into mitigation and adaptation policies. 相似文献
